Imma Read

from Covers EP by Gunther Prague

about

As a white rock band, covering a song which uses the word "bitch" 87 times in the original version is potentially problematic, and we thought a lot about whether we should record it.

We chose to go ahead for two reasons. Firstly, Sororicide's involvement made it a lot more palatable to us. She does not tolerate misogny and would not have chosen to work with us if she felt that sentiment would be present in our version.

Secondly, there's more to the orginal than you might think. Zebra Katz desrcibes himself as "black, queer and other", and explains more about the song and the use of the word in this Guardian interview. www.theguardian.com/music/2013/may/25/zebra-katz-interview-ima-read

We heard first heard Imma Read in December 2016 when Cakes Da Killa, another openly gay US rapper played a show in Coventry promoted by Tin Angel Records. We listened to a few other artists from the same stable, and couldn't believe our eyes and ears when we saw the video for Imma Read. Sororicide suggested giving it a try as a cover, and eventually we added it the list for our Covers EP.
